Frequently Asked Questions

We can provide a range of processes and colours to enhance the look of wood flooring. Techniques such as brushing and water popping can be used prior to the application of stains, coloured oils and floor paints to change the texture and tone of the floor. Samples are applied to the actual floor, allowing selection within the floor’s natural environment.
We can clad stairs with wood to achieve your desired look. We have experience in transforming existing staircases, many integrate harmoniously with your wood flooring.
We strongly advise against the use of any steam cleaning equipment on your wood, LVT or laminate floors. The high heat and moisture from a steam cleaner can penetrate the floor and possibly cause warping, swelling, discolouration and delamination. The use of a steam cleaner may void the manufacturer’s warranty of your floor.
Porcelain and ceramic tiles can generally be steam cleaned safely and effectively.
Always check with your supplier with any flooring.
Yes, we are fully independent floor suppliers and we can source, supply and arrange delivery for most manufacturers. You will be bound by the T&C’s of the manufacturer of your chosen floor.
Please contact us to discuss your requirements, we can make an appointment for you to visit our showroom or alternatively we can bring samples to your home.
We do supply and install floors too. However, if don’t require our fitting service we can supply-only.
We have a team of experienced fitters, specialising in installing your chosen floor.
From start to finish, we offer advice regarding your subfloors, delivery, acclimatisation, installation, cleaning up and maintenance information to help keep floors looking their best for longer. We guarantee our workmanship, should you have an issue after installation, please contact us immediately.
Yes, we follow the guidelines of the flooring manufacturers and supplier’s policies with returns, please contact us for more information.
We provide a comprehensive professional survey as part of our Flooring Supply and Installation service.
This service includes discussing removal of any existing floor coverings, inspection of the subfloor, check moisture and humidity content if applicable, help you with information of potential new flooring options, advise on skirting boards/architraves/ thresholds, door bars & door levels.
Ensure all wet work, such as plastering and screeds are fully dry prior to acclimatising any floor.
The purpose of acclimatisation is to keep the moisture content in new flooring as stable as possible, adjusting to the humidity and temperature in your home.
Natural floors specifically expand and contract with factors such as central heating and seasonal weather changes – these can cause significant movement.
It is always best to check the manufacturer’s specific guidelines regarding acclimatisation of any new floor.
We have the latest, specialist floor sanding machines that are superior to most machines on the hire market. They have a high-quality M class filtering dust extraction system, removing over 95% of the dust created into commercial dust bags.
Please note that due to the nature of the work there will always be a small amount of dust, so we recommend you cover any items that are sensitive to dust.
We will assess the subfloor prior to installation.
The subfloor is the critical layer that ensures the longevity and performance of your new floor, whether it’s wood, vinyl, laminate, or carpet. An ideal subfloor must meet several criteria; it must be structurally stable, dry, clean, flat and smooth. Each of these aspects plays a crucial role in providing a stable and secure base for your flooring, preventing common issues such as uneven wear, squeaking, or premature damage. The subfloor should be free of any imperfections or debris that could affect installation and overall aesthetics of the new floor.
It is essential that the subfloor meets the correct conditions prior to the installation of any new floor covering. We offer a subfloor testing service.
Keeping your floors clean is key to maintaining them. Any harsh chemicals should be avoided. Household cleaners and detergents are too abrasive and can damage or dull the finish causing discolouration.
Mop up spills with a cloth asap to reduce risk of water ingressing joints or staining. Damp mop all your floors, with recommended cleaners, not wet mop as excess water can penetrate the floor and possibly cause warping, swelling, discolouration and delamination.
We recommend felt pads or furniture socks on the legs of all furniture. Lift and avoid dragging when moving furniture, as often grit can be trapped underneath.
Installing barrier mats, for example coir or ribbed matting inside all external doorways is essential.
Any wood flooring needs the right environment to be maintained. Ideally, a room temperature between 17 and 22 degrees Celsius and around 45-65% relative air humidity.
After our work is complete, we will offer you advice and recommend the best cleaner relevant to the finish on your floor.
Floor stains generally take around an hour to dry before we apply any protective finishes.
Water based finishes take 1-3 hours per coat to dry, whereas solvent based lacquers and oils can take 8-12 hours between each coat.
It is possible to walk in socks after the drying times. However, it takes longer for the floor to fully cure.
All situations are different and need to be discussed on an individual basis. Generally, floor restoration can be carried out either before, during or after decorating.
However, we do recommend that the final coat of paint is applied to the skirting boards / architraves after completion of the floors – due to potential scuffing of the edge sander machine.
Solid Wood Flooring is a natural material which is affected by conditions in the atmosphere and environment. Made of a single piece of solid timber milled from a tree, it is more likely to expand and contract with temperature and humidity changes. Solid wood flooring is often machined in random lengths & the longer and wider it is – the less stable it can be.
Being more rapidly affected by moisture and temperature changes, it unsuitable to be installed over a subfloor with either electric or water underfloor heating systems.
Engineered Wood Flooring is made up of more than one solid section of timber, which are glued and compressed onto several layers of cross-core veneered layers or HDF board. This design effectively provides a largely stable product (fractionally affected by moisture and temperature changes) and is therefore the most compatible wood flooring for underfloor heating systems.
The top layer on Engineered Wood Flooring has a thin solid wood wear layer which reduces the number of sanding operations & thus longevity compared to the Solid Wood Flooring.
Engineered Wood Flooring, LVT (Luxury Vinyl Tiling), Laminate, low tog Carpets and Natural Tiles (such as stone and ceramic).
There are strict guidelines and British Standards regarding Temperature and Relative Humidity for both before and after installation. Please contact us for more information.
The main aim is to get the floor as smooth and clean as possible, whilst preserving the wood wear layer and thereby the longevity of the floor. Firstly we vacuum the floor and commence sanding using coarse grit abrasives with commercial sanding and edging machines.
This initial process removes years of old finishes, scratches and dents to reveal a smooth, flat, clean floor.
We usually find most damage or historical stains are not embedded deeply and are therefore removed in the sanding process.
There are instances where some substances have soaked right through into the wood and contaminated the boards, in which case extra repair work may need to be done. We move through the medium to fine grit abrasives, which removes the scratches caused by previous coarser grits. Your floor is now ready for the final vacuum and the application of your chosen finish.
It enhances the appearance and protects existing wood flooring. The sanding process strips off any old finishes and removes surface imperfections taking the floor back to its natural, beautiful colour and grain. It is then ready to be protected, easier to clean/maintain and increases the lifespan of the floor.
